In It For The Duration

My goodness, yesterday was a loooooong day! I was in the day job for 7am and never got away until 6pm – on a FRIDAY! Quite ridiculous so it’s no wonder I slouched on the couch for an hour before I got back to work on good things.

Rick Lupert of the Poetry Superhighway is running the great Free-For-All again this year. Basically, a bunch of poets make their work available for free in the format of an ebook for 24 hours, which can then be downloaded by the public.

It’s a great experiment in poetry, the ebook format, and in the power of marketing. My ebook, SELEKTION, is a collection of poetry from all my chapbooks and will be available as part of the Free-For-All on 1st May, 2011. There’s more information here: Poetry Superhighway.

Last night was all about getting SELEKTION finalised and submitted. I’m sticking with the same cover and poems, but the editorial and byline has changed to bring it up to date. Because I’d taken some time out after work, that’s all I had time for.

The Weekend
As I move into the weekend I do so on the back of a great writing week; I’ve got through a load of work from revising a novella almost to completion to writing a fresh new story. I’ve also taken care of some marketing issues and got my website in tune to the way I’m taking my chapbook sales.

Because of all this, I feel obliged to ensure the weekend counts. It’s Saturday morning and almost time to head out for a long walk, a coffee and read of the paper – as I tend to do at this time of the week – and then later I will be popping round to The Edinburgh Bookshop to see if they will stock my books in their physical format. They have said they “should be” but I’m not taking anything for granted.

As well as sample copies of all my books, I’m taking up some of the promo material I have for them, too, i.e., bookmarks, postcards, etc. I want them to see I am serious and not just another fly by night promoter. I’m in it for the long run, and hopefully they will see this and want to establish a relationship. Fingers crossed.

As for the rest of my weekend, there will be writing, transferring written notes, stories and poems from notebook to PC, gardening, and if I’m lucky, a curry and some beer.
