Weekend Of Sunshine

Saturday morning was dehydration derby after Friday’s impromptu drinking session in the Oxford Bar and then in Edinburgh’s fashionably plastic west end. The high pressure weather system that befell the country only added to my woes, making it warm and humid and not the kind of weather one requires to shake said hangover effectively. Praise the Lord for Irn-Bru.

My best horse came 6th in the Grand National on Saturday afternoon. The other two I bet on did finish but were nowhere to be seen, which is better than it sounds because only 14 horses from 40 completed the 4.5 mile course. It was a really exciting race with one refusal to run on the start line, to some spectacular falls. No serious injuries as far as I know, and the winner, Don’t Push It, fully deserved the win, the manner in which it was won engrossing to watch.

Saturday night was a family night out on Gail’s side. We went to the Omni Centre for a meal in Frankie and Benny’s—Gail, myself and Laura, Gail’s brother, partner and son, Kyle, and the Grandparents—sitting round the long table chatting and eating. With no cannelloni left I opted for my second choice of lasagne. It wasn’t bad, but I’d burnt my tongue on a starter of loaded potato skins so could hardly taste it anyway. After the meal we headed back to Gail’s folks for drinks, which saw me consume another barrel load of Tennent’s Lager.

Yes, you’ve guessed it, another hangover on Sunday, although this wasn’t anywhere near as bad as the day prior. Gail left the house early to tend to the development of her new photographic studio, so when Laura and myself finally rose mid-morning we had breakfast together then decided to do something together for the day.

The sun was glorious all afternoon. We didn’t actually know where we were going at first, but on seeing an outdoor art exhibition of animals in St. Andrew’s Square, made that our first stop. From there we headed to Waterstones on George Street, bought a couple of books and writing pads, and decided to stay there to have lunch in Costa Coffee, where a very large hot chocolate and cappuccino were drank alongside two toasted ham and cheese Paninis.

A slow walk through Edinburgh followed to walk off our food, before we hopped a bus back to Leith and stopped in on Gail and her dad working in her studio, dropping off some cakes we had bought for them earlier in the day. Afterwards, we went back home and spent the rest of the day in the garden reading and having a laugh before nipping out when Gail got home for Laura’s choice of dinner: an imaginative MacDonald’s complete with Crunchie-loaded ice-cream.

It was a relaxing weekend and a most enjoyable one, and although I got less writing done than I hoped I had great fun and still got through a lot of reading. I never even started up my computer once all day yesterday!

Until tomorrow, peace and out!

  1. Except for the hangovers, sounds like good fun. Although I hope GETTING those hangovers was good fun!

  2. I think burning one’s tongue could be possibly the WORST thing in the world–especially at the beginning of a meal!

😉 Sounds like a good weekend!
